Our
building is one of the finest churches in Birmingham. It was built in
1838, enlarged in 1856 and transformed in 1884 by JA Chatwin, a pupil of
Charles Barry. It is grade 2 listed and in the Edgbaston conservation
area. Standing at a busy cross roads, it is a familiar landmark, seen by
thousands of people every day and reminding passers-by of the spiritual
and moral values which underlie human society.
We
believe that it represents the aspirations of past generations and offers
hope for the future to those who search for truth today by being a place
of beauty, of wonder and of prayer and a focus for dignified and
thoughtful Christian worship, supported by a fine musical tradition. It is
also a spiritual focus for the week-day population of commuters in
professional and commercial firms nearby.
We
strive to be a Christian centre for local charities, schools and
universities and a lively and outgoing Christian presence in a diverse
area with a shifting population.
Our
fine musical tradition, supported with excellent acoustics, enables our
church to be an outstanding venue for concerts, recitals, civic occasions
as well as neighbourhood meetings.
We
have a commitment to the Urban priority Area within our parish, working
with other churches and residents to address the causes and symptoms of
social need. St George’s primary school, too, serves the need of the
local people.
